Tutorial | iMovie Sydney Beaudreault, Connor Katz, Joey Shermetaro, and Jessica Hane Introduction The goal of this tutorial is to break down and explain several steps of creating a movie using the iMovie program. The tutorial will bring the user from the beginning steps of starting the project, all the way through completion. Directions begin with downloading your video data, editing scenes, creating additional effects such as transitions and audio or special effects, then following with completion through burning your finished product to DVR, CD, or Onestep DVD. Beginning Your iMovie Project In order to begin your project, you must first have access to your footage on your computer. This section will teach you how to upload your footage onto your computer and how to separate it into different cuts of scenes. Double click the scene or picture ii. A pop up will appear allowing you to select the length at which you choose that piece to run f. How to Cut Scenes iii. Splitting allows you to ‘split’ a clip or picture and place an effect or other choices in between them vii. Begin by highlighting the scene – same as described before in cutting viii. Right click and select split scene ix. You now have the option to place any thing between the two separated clips Transitions and Effects There are several editing techniques that allow for easier transitions and special effects. This section explains how to add creative transitions as well as create audio and visual affects. How to Add Transitions *Transitions make the video flow without simply chopping from scene to scene. Different transitions are available and can be added between two clips. a. Find where the symbols for music, pictures, and text are (these are indicated by a musical note, a camera, and a capital T). b. Next to those symbols, there is a rectangle symbol with

two diagonals through it This is the symbol for transitions, click on it. IMovie tutorial| 2 c. A list of transitions will show up (ie “cross dissolve”, “cross blur”, “ripple”, etc) You may choose which transition you think is most effective. I. To preview these, scroll your mouse over one of the transitions and it will play out automatically. d. Once you decide on a transition, scroll the mouse over that transition e. Click and hold the mouse so you can drag the transition icon over to the screen on the left that shows the clips in your movie. f. Release the mouse button once you are over the place that you want the transition. g. When the transition is placed in the correct position, you can then edit it by scrolling the mouse over the transition and holding it there until a small blue rectangle appears under it. h. Scroll over that blue rectangle until “transition adjustments” comes up, then click on that. i. This will bring up the options to choose the duration

of the transition, and if you want to apply that time to all transitions or just this one. ow to Ad d Au dio Eff ects| Music *Adding music is one of the more advanced steps in iMovie. It connects with the user’s iTunes and can be downloaded to iMovie. Once downloaded, this music can be cut and moved to it’s desired location within the project. a. You can add audio by clicking on the icon with a music note b. When clicking on this, your itunes library will show up, and you can quickly search the song you want. c. Once selecting the song, you will drag it to the left and drop it on the editing screen. d. The song will appear over the clips already in place, and from here you can edit the song. e. To do this, scroll over the top left corner of the music rectangle, and hover over the flower symbol. “Clip trimmer”, “clip adjustments” and “audio adjustments” will appear. f. To adjust the part and length of the song played, click on “clip trimmer” IMovie tutorial| 3 H

g. A yellow line will appear on the beginning and end of the long green bar You can move this yellow line to cut off parts of the song. The farther you move the line down the green bar, the more of the song you will cut off. h. To preview the part you have chosen, click on the play button in the top right corner of that editing screen. When you are satisfied with this selection, click done. How to Add Audio Effects| Voice Recording *Voice recording provides an additional way to add audio effects outside of using iTunes. In recording, any sound may be documented and edited to fit the project. a. You can add a recording of yourself talking by scrolling over the microphone icon b. Click on this, and you will be prompted to click on a clip to start recording Once you know the clip(s) you want to have a voice recording on, click on it and you will begin recording. c. Once done recording, you can edit it the same way you edited the music, by clicking on the flower symbol in the upper

left hand corner of the recording. How to Add Special Effects| Globes/Maps *If the project consists of a video about traveling, you can add a globe or map that draws a line from your starting position on the map, to your ending. a. To add a globe or map, click on the globe signal located next to the transitions symbol. This brings up a bunch of different maps/globes b. Select whichever one you want, and then drag it where you want on the editing screen. c. From here, you can edit it by clicking on the flower symbol located in the bottom left hand corner when you scroll over it and select “clip adjustments”. Then you can enter your starting and ending location, along with the duration you want it shown. Completing Your Project You have multiple options when burning your finished iMovie.
