We have come a long way and what a journey it has been!! For those of you who remember, we have been down this road before with our publication Guinness News from some years back but that has since been

overtaken by time and technology and so here we are. This edition is special not just because of the content but also because of the platform, we are fully digital for the first time!!! We are really thrilled about this new digital format for many reasons but especially because it allows for a faster more informal engagement to take place between us and you, our audience. This edition leads with inspiring interviews with leaders and future leaders, we offer some advice on how to invest, eating right and enjoying some great recipes lovingly prepared using Guinness drinks. Kicking off the event, Seni Adetu Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer called on all staff to lead by example in their various spheres of influence. “Part of our ambition is to be the most respected consumer products

company in Nigeria and walking the pathway of pride in everything we do is the key to achieving that. We cannot expect to be the most respected if we don’t operate with integrity in all our operations. awards were winners from the “Countdown to the Pathway of Pride” competition that ran before the event inviting members of staff to nominate a compliance hero amongst others competitions to win great prizes including an iPad Air and a Samsung S4 Mini. How we positively impact the communities in which we operate is important to us. Water of Life Our key initiative in this area is the Water of Life scheme, in which we establish mini water works for selected local communities to give them access to clean water. Year to date we

have impacted over 1 million beneficiaries through our water of life project. We have our projects in the following states: Some of the water projects that we have built under this scheme can be found in the following states: Lagos,Ogun,Oyo,Benue,Abia,Enugu,Delta,Ondo, Anambra,Kwara ,Imo,Ekiti,Cross-River and Nasarrawa. We are also part of the Safe Water for Africa partnership initiative where we have built projects in Sabo and Ijebu Ode; Lagos and Ogun States respectively. Health We have continued to give support to our Guinness Eye Hospitals in the country to sustain them as centers of excellence for eye care. We have over the years donated state-of-the-art optical equipments and worked on the infrastructure of the Guinness Eye Hospitals at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba and, Nnamdi Azikiwe University teaching hospital Onitsha, Anambra State. These hospitals have attained the status of the citadel of eye care in Nigeria. Over 300,000 beneficiaries have been

impacted by the hospitals. In support for People Living with HIV/AIDS and the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS, the company has consistently celebrated the Worlds AIDS day with Awareness walks and free lectures and VCT testing for members of its host communities. Education Under education, Guinness Nigeria has continued to support and sponsor beneficiaries from our host communities in Lagos, Edo and Abia states under the Guinness scholarship. Under this programme, they are on scholarship to undertake degree and diploma certifications in different courses. The scheme is being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Institute of Management. Guinness Nigeria recently unveiled a strategy to take corporate social responsibility a notch higher with a plan of continuous engagement with graduates from its scholarship programme so as to help them attain their lifes goals. The unique initiative, tagged Guinness Ex-Scholars Excellence Programme

(GEEP), is bound to foster closer affinity between not just the brand and her communities, but the beneficiaries of the scholarship programme that now have a chance of networking amongst themselves as well as benefitting from knowledge empowerment from the benevolent company in the bid to live their dreams. Job Creation Scheme Our job creation scheme is aimed at empowering members of our host communities with the requisite educational, entrepreneurial skills and financial resources to run a business. Under this currently, we have two programs; the technical skills program run in conjunction with the Institute of Industrial Technology and an ice making venture run in conjunction with the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Employee Community Program Friends of the Community Programme (FOC) is an initiative made up of employees of Guinness Nigeria Plc. We now have the term ‘corporate thieves’, people who take advantage of their position to steal from the company and their partners. It has become very prevalent in various sectors across corporate Nigeria and it speaks very badly of us as a people. LIVING UP Supply Chain Director, Cephas Afebuameh talks to Pulse Q: How long have you been working at

Guinness Nigeria? A: I joined Guinness Nigeria on 2nd September 2002 and so this year makes it my 11th year of being in Guinness. Q: How did you get started in Guinness Nigeria and what made you stay so long? A: I was an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer at PZ Cussons when I heard that there was a multinational looking 14 Guinness Nigeria Plc for engineers so I applied for the role and it wasn’t until I got to the second stage of the interview that I realized that the company was Guinness Nigeria. The truth is that I have always loved Diageo and Guinness Nigeria but one of my major attractions before I joined the company was the reputation and quality standard which has been maintained over the years. The standards are world class and it explains why consumers love their brands .I especially loved Malta Guinness and I drink it quite a lot. Another reason was the caliber of people they employ. Anytime I met Guinness Nigeria staff then, they always drove really neat and

well-kept branded cars and for me that meant that if the company can be that neat outside then the company must be one that places a lot of emphasis on ethics, compliance standard, high specification, performance expectation and strong values system that I also hold TO THE LEADERSHIP STANDARD very highly. Of course, I also felt that I could get well paid. Speaking of values, Guinness Nigeria has some of the best corporate values around and that is also part of what has kept me here so long. There is a lot of friendliness here and it feels more like a family. When I first joined the company in Benin, all the people on my street knew me as the Guinness man and that was great for me because there is something big and iconic about the brand name. I guess the final thing I will say on why I have stayed so long at Guinness Nigeria is the opportunity to grow because recognitions and reward is to a large extent based on merit. It is evident that in Guinness Nigeria, when you deliver

brilliantly on your performance objective and the manner of delivery is consistent with the leadership standard and values of the organisation, then there is an assurance of the possibility of attaining high career level. Also because we are part of the Diageo family, you have access to a wide network of professional colleagues and friends across the global business who you have to interact and work with almost on a daily basis. The benefit of this is tremendous and the entire world is pretty much open to you. Sincerely, when you know what you are doing and you choose to do it well, you can go places unlike other companies where you have to explain where you are coming from, who your Godfather is, who you know at the top and all that, here there is nothing like that. Doing your job and delivering performance with integrity is all you need. Q: What do you think makes a great leader? A: A great leader is someone that can engage in interactive processes even in complex environments with

other people to influence and impact them positively. Someone that manages resources effectively to achieve mutual goals. Someone that has the ability to see ahead and can ask the question ‘where do we want to go?’ and can get the required resources to grow the business and people. Part of that is the ability to inspire and motivate Guinness Nigeria Plc 15 Source: http://www.doksinet COVER STORY those around him/her. A great leader also has to be quite clear about his role concerning the goal of the organisation, relationship to stakeholders, motivation, decision making, risk assessment and management etc. Obviously, he needs to know how to create a sense of purpose that touches people so deeply that they will be willing to fully commit themselves and persevere to achieve the set goals. The people factor is also very key and leaders have to understand that human beings are social beings – if you don’t show compassion for those around you and also demonstrate passion for

result, then you are not likely to be a successful leader. The attributes of a great leader are not exhaustive, and you also have to consider things like, acting with integrity, building relationship, valuing others, communicating effectively, earning the respect of others, demonstrating humility, completely not self-centered and shuns sentiments and biases in can-do-spirit. They had it tough growing up and I sense that their upbringing and quest for liberation from poverty shaped their lifestyles and their aim in life. I am lucky that I still have them and I am eternally grateful to God for all that they passed on to me. In the professional space, someone that has impacted me as a leader is Francis Agbonlahor, the current Managing Director of our business in Ethiopia. Francis was the first leader I worked for in Diageo and we shared a close relationship even beyond the office. He showed a trust and confidence in me that allowed me to excel. He always made me feel like I could achieve

anything and that genuine inspiration helped to build me up as a leader in my own right. Once people demonstrate confidence in you and empower you to perform, it becomes easy to achieve great things. I recall while at PZ Cussons, I worked with an Indian man called Eng. Sekar who was my Chief Engineer at the time. He always growing up till this age. They remind me constantly that I am MADE OF MORE and that GREATNESS lies within me, so I can aspire to achieve great results and influence more people positively. Q: What would you say are some of the challenges that many leaders face in the corporate world? A: I think there are lots of challenges that many leaders face but a few but critical in my view are: inability to role model personal integrity and lead a life of enviable compliance, controls and ethics. I think most time, many leaders find it difficult to mastering the skill to move effectively between strategic and tactical levels and lack the courage to think and act like an

entrepreneur. I find that many leaders are too tactical and don’t appear to look beyond the next two or three financial years performance which means that they are not able to leave commendable legacies and by implication, their actions tell on the future generations. This sort of attitude does not create an atmosphere for a great leader is someone that can influence and impact others positively. Someone that has the ability to see ahead, that can ask the question ‘where do we want to go?’ and can get the required resources to deliver what needs to be achieved and forge ahead into the future. Part of that is the ability to inspire and motivate those around you. dealing with people and so many other things. Q: Can you give us examples of people that have really had an impact on you as a leader and why? A: I have been fortunate in my life. Most people might not believe this, but my parents were uneducated, and for me they are the most inspirational leaders I have ever encountered.

All the characteristics I mentioned that are needed to be a good leader were those that my parents exhibited – Integrity, competitiveness, passion for success, commitment to growth and freedom, hard work, relationship building, genuine help for people, positive mindset and the 16 Guinness Nigeria Plc used to say to me ‘Cephas, never mind that we have different skin colour, I am not better than you in any way. Prove yourself and consistently prove yourself’ and you can imagine how that must have impacted me as a young man it really made me feel like I could do anything and achieve anything. I generally I have been blessed to work with some great people who have all had something positive to add to me. I could really give a long list, even down to some of the teachers I had in school growing up. I have to say that God has been so gracious to me so by design, He has always allowed my path to cross with that of very great leaders right from Q:How many markets have you worked in?

A: Apart from Nigeria, I have only worked on full time basis in East Africa where I was the Operations Director for our Diageo business in Kenya from where our manufacturing operations catered for the needs of Uganda and Tanzania. We also exported to most countries in East Africa and the UK. I aspire to work in many other countries because there is so much cross cultural experience still available to garner from international exposure. Q: When the going gets tough, as I am sure it does from time to time, what keeps you going? A: First and foremost, what keeps me going is the fact that I have GOD who can see me through tough times irrespective of how long it lasts because every challenge is a passing phase and it does have an expiry date. I also rely on what I call my intrinsic motivations by counting all the successes of the past and the need to add more feathers to my cap. When I really need to perk myself up, I motivate myself at such times by connecting to my purpose in life which

is to create joy wherever I am. For me, this is deeply-rooted and goes beyond whatever pressure I might be facing in the office or otherwise. It is about life, I like to create joy wherever I find myself, in my family, in my church, anywhere. So when things are tough, I ask myself what am I doing to create joy for myself or my boss or the people that are working with me and if I am able to answer that question satisfactorily, it becomes easy to align myself. There is so much stress in the world system already; I don’t want to add to it in any way. This purpose really pushes me to hang in there when things get really pressured. people to succeed and what eventually happens is that these leaders do not build successors after them and organizations cannot survive for long when that happens. Q: Why do you think Guinness Nigeria is a leader in the industry? I think Guinness is a leader in the industry for several obvious reasons and let me state some of them: As I said earlier, people

management is a key aspect of leadership but unfortunately, some leaders struggle to manage people the way they should. You encounter some leaders who treat those around them with disrespect and that does not encourage people. It is important for leaders to train people to achieve more than even they achieved but not many leaders do that these days. • The Brand name GUINNESS commands so much respect because the reputation of the company is second to none in the industry. • It is also the only Total Beverage alcohol (TBA) company in Nigeria and by this I mean the company can boast of all categories of drink from Spirit to Beer, Malt drinks, Ready to Drink and Carbonated soft drinks of high quality. Q: What do you think are some of the most critical character traits that are missing in young people today what are needed to make them better leaders tomorrow? A: I think one major thing is the lack of patience in young people today. Everybody wants to make it big, and they want to

make it big now! Young people these days are not willing to be patient to settle down and learn, they are not willing to exhibit the diligence to master what they are doing and build a solid foundation. All the characteristics I mentioned that are needed to be a good leader where those that my parents exhibited – hard work, relationships, knowing what you want and going for it The company perfectly complements its great quality brand with world class advertisements and marketing campaigns to delight her consumers. Speaking about workplace culture and the code of business conduct Guinness operates with very high ethical stands and role models corporate governance in every respect. we focus also on career development for our employees and there are valuable testimonies to that. I know at least two current MD/CEO who are managing some other Diageo Markets and they started as graduate management trainees some years ago. In summary, from both intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation angles,

Guinness Nigeria remains a leader in the industry. So many people come to me and say ‘oh this is my second year on the job, if I don’t get a promotion or more money, I will leave’. Young people just want the best in life without necessarily doing the hard work and committing the time it takes to achieve these things and I think it is a real problem. Anyways, I am young too and hope I won’t be misunderstood (laughs) Q: What advice would you give to someone who is coming into a leadership position for the first time to help them succeed in that position? A: The first thing is to know what you want and understand your overall purpose and motivation. This is important because when you have that understanding it will help you to stay focused through anything you might experience as you try to achieve your goal. Leadership can be a very lonely path especially if you are leader that wants transformation, you will find that it can get very lonely. Of course if you are a leader that

just wants to carry on transactions, then the whole world will be your friend. I will also advise that you are mindful of your followers. No matter how great an individual is if you do not have followers you cannot be called a leader so the aspect of relationship management is very important. You need to be able to motivate, encourage and inspire those behind you so that when you need to make those hard decisions, they will be right there with you. Another thing is that integrity matters, it is worthless to be in a position and then it should be found later that you were involved in fraud or unethical practices – integrity matters. In addition any great leader has to be able to factor in succession planning from day one. The final thing I will say is to rely on God. For me, it is the most important. without Him, I must

confess that I can do nothing because He owns me and he remains my all sufficient source. God is the most important part of my success story and I will advise everyone to put Him first in all things. Q: Tell us one unusual thing that most people might not know about you? A: Most people will not know that I was once a volunteer Game Guard and Museum Curator. I worked at Yankari National Park in Bauchi Nigeria during my NYSC service year in 1996 where my original role was that of a Park engineer. I really was out then to make a difference and standout among other corpers so in addition to my engineering role, I volunteered to work as a game guard. When we did not have many guests, I also volunteered to work as a Curator in the Animal Museum and teach in the Camp Primary School. My hands were really full throughout that period and I still treasure the experience till date. You can image how it feels for to educate Tourist from all the world about animals, their behaviours, feeding

habits, gestation and My extend family is really quite large. I often joke that one day, Google search can tell how many of us there really are(laughs) Q: How do you kick back? A: It is a growth area for me as I have often been told that I don’t relax enough. I do enjoy reading however, I read my BIBLE and other leadership books– for me the BIBLE is the best leadership book available because it is written by the leader of all leaders. I also like being around people – if I am not in the office I am in church, if I am not in church I am visiting friends. I travel once in a while colleagues so that discouraged me even more. Back then my friends encouraged me to stick just buying the food stuffs and that they would cook so that was a system that worked for me. I am grateful again that my wife is a great cook, probably the best in the world, so I am fortunate that I am in safe hands. Q: What is your favourite food? A: Anything made from beans – beans in any format is always a hit

with me. Parting shot? I guess my final word will be on integrity. This generation seems to be too eager to make money by any means. A: I am happily married to a beautiful wife, Funmi – we have been married now for 14 years, she is a great gospel artiste and a strong adviser in domestic affairs. Q: Are you a good cook? A: Absolutely not. I don’t like cooking at all and that is why I appreciate people that

cook and I hardly complain about food because I know the effort it takes to prepare a good meal. I have very loving parents in their 70s, very humorous and hardworking folks. I have lots and lots of siblings and our family is very large – from my mum there are four girls and three boys. Growing up, cooking for me was boring. Our parents always encouraged the boys to go to the farm and manage our Store while the girls have the responsibility to prepare food for the family and take care of the house, so coming back from the farm the girls would have prepared the food and we all just come and eat. have the term ‘corporate thieves’, people who take advantage of their position to steal from the company and their partners. It has become very prevalent in various sectors across corporate Nigeria and it speaks very badly of us as a people. I want to advise anyone in any position of authority against that, no matter how well you think you might be covering it up, these things always

come to light. We see everyday people that were celebrated when they were in office and when they have left that position we begin to find out that something was not right, that is not good leadership. I grew up very accustomed to that. We spend some time speaking with one such talent in the person of Oluwaseun Adekunle, a member of the Graduate Management Trainee class of 2012. Q: Tell me about yourself. A: I am Oluwaseun Adekunle, a 2nd year Graduate Management Trainee at Guinness Nigeria Plc. I work in the Tax & Payroll unit. Prior to my current role, my

first rotation was in Commercial Finance where I worked as a Decision Support Analyst for the sales team. Outside work, I am a member of Friends of the Community – FOC (Guinness Nigeria’s in-house social responsibility project championed by employees). Q: What factors influenced you to join this graduate management programme? A: There are 4 factors. Firstly the breadth of experience the programme offers within finance, secondly the possibility of working in another market within Africa, thirdly, the fact that the program is Pan-Africa – which would provide an opportunity to interact with other young professionals like me within Diageo Africa and finally the reputation functional knowledge. Q: How do you see this programme fitting into your career goals? A: The programme provides a good platform to experience different areas of finance within Diageo Africa. It also provides an opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of our purpose of celebrating life every day, everywhere. The

expertise being built, and the knowledge being acquired will serve as a spring board in achieving my career goals. Q: What skills or abilities do you hope to strengthen through our programme? A: Analytical skills, stakeholder management and leadership. Q: What is your greatest strength? What is one of your weaknesses? A: My greatest strength is the drive to succeed at whatever I do. At times, I overwork myself in a bid to shape the desired result. Q: What are your goals for the next five years? A: Professionally – Complete my final rotation on the Graduate Management Trainee programme by taking a Supply Finance Analyst role. Become a Chartered Management Accountant in 3 years. Gain more functional experience by taking up roles in Supply Finance, Commercial Finance and Treasury within the next 5 years. which is a publication of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Q: What do you believe to be the major trends in your intended career field at this time? A: The

major trends are – Tax avoidance by companies globally (There is a dilemma between the legality of tax avoidance versus public pressure), big data and how companies can draw insights from them and implementation of IFRS globally. Q: What do you think is the most important development in the field over the past 25 years, and why? A: This might be tricky because I haven’t been in the field for even a 10th of 25 years but my guess would be that the most important development in finance in the last 25 years is the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) globally. I consider this the most important because the adoption of IFRS allows comparability of the financial statements of companies across the over 113 countries that have adopted these standards. Q: What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies or outside interests? A: I am an indoor person so I’ll rather watch a movie or read a newspaper in my spare time. As for my hobbies, I am
