Source: http://www.doksinet The Academic Planner “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”-Benjamin Franklin •In High School, you just can’t juggle school, homework, family, extracurricular, and social responsibilities without a system •Planners really work if you use them regularly it may take two to three weeks to make it a habit, but it’s worth it! •If you write something down, you are 10 times more likely to remember it! So, let’s get started Source: http://www.doksinet What Kind of

Planner Do You Need Weekly and Monthly Planning •You need to be able to see the whole week at a glanceweekly planning is crucial! Month-at-aglance pages are also helpful. •You need room to write ALL of your commitments. •Example: You check your planner on Sunday night and notice you have a Band concert after school on Tuesday. Now you know to build in study time on Monday night for that exam on Wednesday! Source: http://www.doksinet When Should You Use Your Planner When in doubt, get that planner out! Sunday Night Spend 10 minutes on Sunday evenings writing down all of your commitments for the week During class Keep your planner accessibleright on your desk. Record your homework as it is assigned in class. End of school day Take a few seconds to plan when you will work on homework that evening. Look through the assignment list and plan about how much time you will need. At home, after school Look at your planner and stay on schedule get those ‘rock priorities’

done first! Before Bedtime Avoid rushed mornings by doing one last check of your plannerdid you get forms signed, all homework complete, is everything in your backpack? Source: http://www.doksinet Making the Most of Your Planning Set up Sunday evening meetings with your parents to see what they have planned for you for the week and share your activities Use planned study time wiselyset a timer and try to beat the clock. The point is not to rush but to stay focused for a set amount of time. Stay on taskdon’t accept phone calls, texts, and Facebook messages during your set study time. They’ll still be there when you’re finished. Source: http://www.doksinet Activity & Homework Let’s Practice Using a Weekly Planning Page 1. Jot down your plan for the week using the sample weekly planning page 2. Follow your plan for the rest of the week 3. Bring your planning page or your own planner to next week’s Advisement Source: http://www.doksinet Organize Your

Space De-clutter your study space and backpack •Keep a container with pens, pencils, calculators, staplers, dictionary, thesaurus, etc. in your study space •Remove distractionsdon’t be tempted to pick up your phone every time you get a message •DO NOT throw things in the bottom of your backpack never to be seen againput sheets back in folders when they are returned (the front pocket will work when you’re in a hurry) •Students often say they did the work but didn’t turn it in Where was it? Crumpled in the bottom of the backpack! Source: http://www.doksinet Organize Your Space The Homework Folder •You MUST do your homework to be successful in high schoolJust Do It! •Some students find it beneficial to have a separate folder just for homework •During a homework checkdon’t scramble, just grab your folder! Spend the rest of the time, making a homework folder. Decorate it any way you like! Source: http://www.doksinet Next SessionLesson 3 Organize Your Things

teachers have specific requirements for binder set upAlways defer to your teacher’s specifications! Source: http://www.doksinet Staying OrganizedIt’s an ongoing process Put the date on all of your papers, so you can easily put them in the right order Never put loose papers inside your backpack. If you have to leave class in a rush, put loose papers in the front of your binder At home, take 60 seconds to put any stray papers in their correct folders Use the back pocket in your binder for miscellaneous items (club forms, etc.) Source: http://www.doksinet Organize Your Things The Night Before •Put all of your papers back in the right place in your binders •Do a planner checkdid you complete everything? do you have all of your forms? •Pack up your backpack with your binders, anything you will need for afterschool, and any supplies you might need •Put your backpack by the door Source: http://www.doksinet ActivityTime to Set it up Biology Binder •Get out

Source: http://www.doksinet Formative Grades “Practice is the best of all instructors”- Roman author •Formative grades are used for things that are helping you to FORM your knowledgei.e, homework, most quizzes, etc. •Formative assignments shouldn’t be blown off! They can bring your average down a letter grade or more. Twenty five percent of your grade makes a difference! •Formative assignments are PRACTICE for your summative assessment coming up. Source: http://www.doksinet Formative GradesPredictor of academic success We have seen that time and time again there is a correlation between a student’s quiz grade for a particular unit and their test grade for that unit. Why do you think this is the case? What could a student do if they get a 70 on a quiz to make sure they

don’t get a 70 on the test? How can they use their quiz to inform their study plan? What about homework? If a student completes 7/10 of their homework assignments for a unit, what do you predict their test grade will be? Source: http://www.doksinet Homework HomeworkWhy Do It? •Think of homework as your opportunity to practice what will be on the test •Sometimes test questions look VERY similar to homework and study packet questionswhat better way to prep! •Homework shows you what you do and don’t knowif you can’t figure out a homework problem, you have time to get help Source: http://www.doksinet ActivityProve it to yourself! Let’s practice our graphing skills •Take out your grade report. •Make a Graph: •Make a timeline as the x axis starting with August, then September, then October •Make a number line for the y axis starting with 30, then 40, and go all the way to 100 •Graph your formative grades using dots & connect with a straight line.

•Graph your summative grades using dots & connect with a dotted line. Source: http://www.doksinet Pair and Share Discuss your results. Turn to the person sitting to your left. Share the relationship you saw between the gradesyou don’t have to share actual grades.  What does this experiment tell you? Source: http://www.doksinet ActivityThis is really interesting! Attendance and it’s role in the big picture •Take out your attendance report. •Go back to your graph •Change the numbers on the y axis to 1-7 •Graph your absences using the number of absences as they correspond to the months •Use an * to graph your absences and connect them with a dashed line ----•Now, take a look at the big picturedo you see a relationship between your absences and your grades? Source: http://www.doksinet AttendanceMissing School= Missing Out! It’s a lot easier to keep up than it is to catch up! 9th grade attendance rates are one of the best predictors of whether or not

a student will graduate on time The U.S Department of Education maintains that for every missed day of school, it takes a student TWO days to catch up Come to school regularly so you don’t miss instruction, class discussions, and helpful examples Make up work can get very overwhelmingIF you do miss school, check ANGEL to see what was covered that day, make a plan with each teacher to find out when you can take missed quizzes or tests, and turn in any missing work Source: http://www.doksinet Next SessionLesson 6 Study Techniques See you next time! How important is attendance? Source: http://www.doksinet Study Techniques Memorization • Your mind is built to rememberYour brain is the greatest tool in the world!! • It never loses anything throughout your life unless you suffer from some type of brain injury/damage • When we say we ‘forget’, we actually just have a lack of recall • We are more likely to remember what we can relate to our own priorities or experiences Source: http://www.doksinet Memory Helpers • Be interestedif you don’t find something interesting, try and make it interesting • Be criticalPick the most important things to remember! When reading, look at the titles and headings of sections for clues on what is most important • Make connectionsConnect with what you are learningMake the information

meaningful to you • PracticeStudy in several short periods and review often Source: http://www.doksinet Memory Devices Mnemonics • A mnemonic is a memory deviceIt’s an effective and powerful tool that has been proven to help people remember details, lists, and all types of information • What are some mnemonics that you know of and use? Source: http://www.doksinet Mnemonic Examples These really work! • Leaves of three, let it bepoison ivy • Red next to yellow could kill a fellow! Red next to black won’t hurt Jack! –red coral snake • Lefty loosey, righty tighty Source: http://www.doksinet Mnemonic Devices Acronyms •Acronymsa word created using the first letter of each word of the important information •We use acronyms everyday! Here are some examples •SCUBASelf-contained underwater breathing apparatus •FAQFrequently Asked Questions •NASCARNational Association for Stock Car Auto Racing Source: http://www.doksinet Mnemonic Devices Acrostics

•Acrosticsa sentence in which the first letter of each word connects with the information you need to recall Here are a few common acrostics. •“Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally”order of operations when solving math problems •“My very educated mother just served us nachos”the order of the planets Source: http://www.doksinet ActivityLet’s practice! Write your own sentence to help you remember the oceans in order by size: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic Use the first letter of each wordPAIA What did you come up with? Source: http://www.doksinet Mnemonic Devices Chunking •Chunkinggrouping related information into smaller, more manageable categories •Many people believe we can recall about 7 different things at oncetry chunking into 7 groups (or less) •We use chunking to remember phone numbers (10 digits) by adding parentheses and hyphens to chunk. Example- 3475559122 or (347) 555-9122 Source: http://www.doksinet ActivityYour turn! Test yourself. •I’m

going to say 10 numbers aloud and ask you to repeat the numbers. •Then, I’ll say 10 numbers aloud, but say them like a phone number (pausing after the 3rd and 6th numbers). •Let’s see who has a much easier time with the second set. Please share your success stories. Source: http://www.doksinet Note Taking in Class General Tips •Note

taking keeps you actively engaged in class •Don’t try to write notes word for wordUse shorthand to write down main ideas •Writing down material is important but listening and analyzing is just as important •Pay attention to cues from the teacherpausing for emphasis, restating a point, saying “you’ll see this again” •Pay attention to detailsmaterial written on the board, shown in a PowerPoint, etc., are things to put in notes Source: http://www.doksinet Note Taking Common Abbreviations b/c= because w/= with w/out= without w/in= within +, &= and gov= government b/f= before *= important Intro= introduction ∆= change cont.= continue re:= regarding esp.= especially Q= question A= answer bkgd= background Source: http://www.doksinet Let’s Practice Now Take out a scratch piece of paper. Practice writing notes from the blurb I read below. Source: http://www.doksinet Discussion Let’s Debrief •Share some of the shortcuts you took when writing down your

notes •What key points did you record? •What facts do you think the teacher may ask you on an exam? Source: http://www.doksinet Note Taking The Cornell Method The Cornell Method is a widely used note taking system invented in the 1950s at Cornell University. The system not only keeps your notes organized, but also creates a study guide within itself. This method is preferred by most law schools. Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method Set up your paper 1. Address your paper like you normally would any other paper. (Include name, date, and class period). 2. Draw lines on your paper to make it look like the picture on the right. Prepare pages before class if possible. 3. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just as close as you can get. Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method How to use it •Take notes like you normally would on the right side of the vertical line •Continue to take notes on as many pages as you need until the lecture is complete •After the lecture,

go back and give headings to your notes to make topics easier to find when you study Always take notes here. Summarize each section of your notes into only a few words Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method History Example Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method Biology Example Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method The Five R’s •Step 1: RECORD Take notes on the right side of the page •Step 2: REVISE Label your notes in short, easy to find phrases in the left column of the page •Step 3: RECITE Cover the right side of the page with a sheet of paper. Using the phrases on the leftquiz yourself. Say everything you know about the phrase of word in the left column. NOW, YOU’RE STUDYING!!! Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method The Five R’s •Step 4: REFLECT Reflect on the material by asking yourself questions What’s the significance of these facts? What principles are these based on? How can I apply them? How do they fit in with what I already

know? •Step 5: REVIEW Reread your notes daily so you don’t have to cram the night before Source: http://www.doksinet Cornell Method Pair and Share • Use the Cornell Method handout on Biology • Cover the right hand side with the notes • Quiz the person behind you for 1 minute You see, It’s a ready-made study guide! week Discussion Did anyone start using the Cornell Method? Please share how it is working for you. Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking Strategies Reasons for Poor Performance •Being absent and not making up missed work •Not paying attention in class •Not completing homework •Waiting too long to begin studying •Studying the wrong material •Running out of time •Test anxiety Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking The Basics •Know what material will be included on the test •Budget time well in advance to study and review •Practice, practice, practice! •Make flash cards for key material and use Quizlet.com •Work with a study group to divide up material and practice teaching each other •Be at your best mentally and physically Source: http://www.doksinet Discussion Share some test taking tips that you have found to be effective. Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking Multiple Choice •There’s one correct answerit’s your job to find it!

•Read the question carefully and look for words like (always, only, most, all, never, completely, best, worst, smallest, largest) •Answer the question in your own words and then look for your answer •If you don’t see your answer, start eliminating responses until you can get down to two possibilities Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking Multiple Choice (cont.) •Be wary of multiple-response questions“all of the above” “none of the above” or a combination of choices •Underline key terms and clue words •For multiple-response questions, treat each response as a True/False situation Example: The three branches of government include: A. Executive, Judicial, and Senate (False) B. Presidential, Judicial and Executive (False) C. Presidential, Legislative, and Punitive (False) D. Executive, Legislative and Judicial (TRUED must be the answer!) Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking True/False •A statement has to be completely true for you to select true •If

any part of the statement is false, then your response should be false •Be careful of reading too much into the questionanswer it on its face value •Look for words like all, only, and always and assess if the statement is true in all instances •Look for words like frequently, likely, generally, and usually and assess if the statement is true most of the time Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking Matching •Be careful with these because an incorrect answer leads to a domino effect of wrong answers •Match the items you are certain of, cross off the choices that you have used, and proceed with the remaining items •Analyze the remaining choices to look for clues Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking Short Answer •Typically can be written in paragraph or bullet list format •Make sure you’ve answered all parts of the question •Emphasis is primarily on your ability to show you know the information not quality of writing Source: http://www.doksinet Test

Taking Essay Exams •Comprehensive analysis •Look for words, such as, summarize, defend, solve, explain, list, debate, clarify, describe, compare and contrast to determine how to answer the question •ROW method •R- Read (Read the question multiple times) •O- Outline (Outline the main topics you want to cover in the margins or on the back of the paper) •W- Write your essay, remember to use an opening and closing paragraph Source: http://www.doksinet Test Taking Take Home and Open Book •Students usually get excited about these tests •Open Book exams require preparationsticky notes flagging important information, page numbers jotted down for key charts, etc., and summary sheets created to make info easily accessible •Don’t take these too lightly! Source: http://www.doksinet Test Anxiety Before the Test •Prepare so you feel confident that you know the material •View the exam as a way to demonstrate what you know •Avoid speaking with students who have not

prepared or express negativity (You know the ones I’m talking about!) •Catch yourself! When you begin having negative thoughts, such as, “I’m going to fail this test”, immediately begin positive self-talk, such as “I’m prepared for this test” and “I can handle this!” Source: http://www.doksinet Test Anxiety During the Test •Read the directions carefully •Budget your test taking time •Change positions to help you relax •If you go blank, skip the question and go on •If youre taking an essay test and you go blank, pick a question and start writingIt may trigger the answer •Dont panic when students start handing in their papers Theres no reward for being the first one finished Source: http://www.doksinet Next SessionLesson 9 Study Skills Recap See you next time!
