Suggested Knowledge, Skills, Strategies and Resources The following knowledge, skills and values are based on the English Language C & A Guide (S4-S6), suggested schemes of work of the English Language Education Section and the piloted projects launched by Language Learning Support Section and *five participating schools. They are useful for helping teachers work out expected learning outcomes for students. Teachers should exercise their discretion as to which knowledge, skills, values and attitudes they would like to cover based on students’ needs, interests and abilities. I. Learning English through Social Issues Suggested Items for Setting Learning Outcomes Knowledge        Use related linguistic and structural features for discussing and analysing social issues in texts Show a basic understanding of the definitions of some social issues and their adverse impacts Identify causes, effects and solutions of some social issues Identify informed opinions

and arguments Identify facts and evidence Show a basic concept of the common qualitative and quantitative research methods such as questionnaires and interviews Cite sources Skills         Use related language skills in the broad learning outcomes in the Curriculum & Assessment Guide (pp.48-49) Analyse causes and consequences of social issues with reasoning skills Apply problem-solving skills for working out solutions for some social issues Apply basic research skills (e.g use of questionnaires and interviews, etc) and analyse data collected Interpret and evaluate information and arguments Organise data and draw conclusions from them Adopt multiple perspectives Use appropriate presentation skills Values Attitudes and   Positive social values such as equality, interdependence and tolerance An open and critical attitude towards values, ideas and perspectives Language Learning Support Section Knowledge, skills, strategies and resources of the

opinions and arguments Distinguish between strong arguments and weak arguments Understand rhetoric (e.g persuading the audience through public speaking) Identify facts, analogies, examples and evidence Identify persuasive devices and strategies Show a basic concept of the major reasoning methods - inductive and deductive reasoning Show a basic concept of fallacies and how to make rebuttals Skills           Use related language skills in the broad learning outcomes in the Curriculum & Assessment Guide (pp.48-49) Identify and define key terms in motions Apply rhetorical strategies (e.g strategies for making good public speeches) Research, organise, evaluate information related to the motion Analyse underlying principles and assumptions Structure and formulate arguments logically Identify fallacies and flaws in arguments of the opposing side for preparing rebuttals Anticipate the arguments of the opposing side Write and present speeches and rebuttals

Learning English through Workplace English Suggested Items for Setting Learning Outcomes Knowledge        Skills        Values Attitudes and   Use linguistic, structural and generic features used in spoken and written business-related communication and correspondence Display a basic concept of organizational setup in various trades and businesses and of organizational image and work ethics Display an awareness of the nature of service transactions and salesmanship Show a basic concept of the procedures and the necessary preparation and follow-ups for meetings Use telephone etiquette Show knowledge about some basic strategies for handling workplace-related problems (e.g complaints of customers) Show a basic concept of how to prepare for interviews from interviewers’ and / or
